The materials that can be used in Art Therapy; drawing, painting, collage, clay modelling and construction can invite you or your child to explore, experiment and play.
Inner feelings can be projected into the art product and be safely held and contained within it. Strong statements can be made in acceptable forms, positive and negative emotions can be experienced and experimented with and behaviour is contained instead of acted out inappropriately.
The focus is on both process and product and through art making, inner realities can be manifested without words. The artwork produced can hold '...great feeling and meaning and can assist verbalisation. This is often because the discussion of a painting of a feeling is much less threatening than the actual feeling.' Johnson, 1987.
