Counselling and Psychotherapy - What to Expect
I offer both counselling and psychotherapy sessions, and you may be wondering what the differences are between the two.
Counselling is generally for shorter term issues or problems that have arisen recently, such as a job loss or bereavement. Counselling may require fewer sessions than psychotherapy.
Psychotherapy is generally for longer-standing difficulties or problems rooted in past experiences like childhood adversity or repressed feelings
In reality, counselling and psychotherapy often overlap. As you explore your feelings, counselling may lead naturally into psychotherapy when deeper healing is needed.
During our weekly sessions, I provide support, encouragement, and gentle challenge, always with warmth, empathy, and respect for your unique journey.
We’ll work together for as long as feels helpful, regularly reviewing progress and planning any endings thoughtfully, your readiness and well-being are always central.
“The client knows what hurts, which direction to go, what problems are crucial and what experiences have been deeply buried.”
— Carl Rogers
My Approach
My core training is Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, drawing on many approaches including person-centred therapy, sand tray therapy, transactional analysis, cognitive behavioural therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and creative therapies like art, music, and drama.
I’m primarily drawn to person-centred therapy, where we work as equals to explore whatever is on your mind; past, present, or future. I also integrate other methods when helpful.
Whether talking or creative expression feels best for you, you’re welcome to explore your feelings in the way that suits you.
I provide a calm, safe, and containing space to gently explore overwhelming or difficult emotions.
Weekly sessions help build a strong therapeutic relationship and sense of containment, but we’ll always move at a pace that feels right for you.
It’s normal to feel anxious before therapy starts. My aim is for you to feel seen, heard, and fully understood.
Keep an eye on my blog for more insights into how I work.
